As Akaeli led them into what she called the âentry pod,â Eris was surprised by how warm and welcoming it looked. The walls were buttery yellow, and the floor was covered in overlapping carpets woven of rich, earth-tone fibers. In the center of the room, five floral chairs were arranged in a circle around a polished wood table. Everything was bathed in sunlight streaming down from a skylight in the domed ceiling.
âItâs beautiful,â Eris said, surveying the room. âDid it come like this? I would have thought a Chakra Corp base would be, you know ... colder.â
Akaeli smiled. âYouâre not wrong. Everything was white and sterile when I got here. But since this was a long term assignment, I got permission to redecorate and bring a little life to the place.â
âYou have great taste.â
âThank you. You have great taste for noticing my great taste.â
Sheâd better not turn out to be evil, Eris thought, because Iâm starting to like her.
âPlease wait here while I fetch Dr. Vado Vado,â Akaeli said, gesturing at the chairs. Then she strode toward a long green curtain to the left of the entry door, pushed it aside to reveal an opening in the wall, and disappeared into the corridor beyond.
Sitting on one of the floral chairs, Eris happily discovered the seat felt as plush as it looked. Miguri and Kiguri also sat down, but Varrin leaned back against the curved wall and crossed his arms. His lips were pressed together, and he was staring hard at the green curtain.
I thought heâd be more relaxed once we got here, Eris thought, but he looks even tenser. Seriously, Varrin, whatâs going on in that bewildering Rakorsian brain of yours?
âWell,â Miguri finally said. âI think it is safe to assume Akaeli is not an evil scientist.â
Eris laughed. âI have trouble picturing an evil scientist buying chairs covered in giant flowers.â
âHer robotic limbs are out of system,â Kiguri said, his green hair fluffy as he bounced up and down on his seat. âAm I correct in thinking she is Chingun?â
âChingun?â Eris asked.
âHer species,â Miguri said. âHumanoids, from the planet Chingu.â
Eris frowned. âI know that name â¦â
âI suggested Kalla go there,â Varrin said.
âRight. Because of ⦠something â¦â
âChakra Con.â
âWhich is what?â
âA huge science and technology convention organized by Chakra Corp every year.â
âRemind me never to visit Chingu.â
Varrin snorted. âA lot of companies hold conventions on Chingu, not just Chakra Corp. Itâs a perfectly decent planet to visit.â
âThatâs what they want you to think,â Eris said. âFine, fine, I wonât rule Chingu out completely.â She turned to Miguri. âHow do you know sheâs Chingun? She looks human to meâI mean, except for the glowing eyes and robot limbs, obviously.â
âIt is precisely because of those features,â Miguri said. âI have only been to Chingu once, but it was ⦠quite the experience. The Chinguns have an extremely colorful fashion sense, and they love technology. It seemed like every second Chingun I met had some sort of robotic implant.â
âSo theyâre all cyborgs?â
Miguri shrugged.
